The Fanatic Gecko 298 is a classic, highly regarded freeride funboard originally introduced in the late 1990s. It features a length of 298 cm, a width of 62.5 cm, and a volume of 135 liters. It is widely praised as a durable, user-friendly progression board for intermediate riders.
Performance Overview
- Early Planing: The board steps onto a plane easily and passively without requiring aggressive pumping or expert technique.
- Control and Stability: The flat deck shape provides a predictable, steady platform. It handles choppy bay waters and swell smoothly.
- Maneuverability: It responds predictably to foot steering. It excels at helping riders transition into carve gybes via its wide, drawn-out turning arc.
- Top Speed: It delivers respectable cruising speeds for blasting. However, it has a limited top end and will lose a flat-out drag race against dedicated slalom gear.
Key Features and Construction
- Class-X/HRS Construction: Built using robust composite skin technology, making the hull exceptionally ding- and impact-resistant compared to fragile sandwich race boards.
- Quick-Lok Footstrap System: Features a screwless adjustment design, allowing you to easily reposition the footstraps on the fly without a screwdriver.
- Strap Customization: Incorporates multiple inboard and outboard plug configurations to accommodate both progressing riders and high-wind blasters.
The Verdict
The Gecko 298 is an ideal progression platform. It is perfect if you are moving past beginner gear, learning to use a harness, or mastering your first power gybes. Because it was a highly popular model, it remains a common, budget-friendly option on the secondhand market. [1, 2, 3]
